2013 Winter Learning Plan

The "Winter Learning Plan" is an optional assignment to enhance language learning over the holiday break.

Students should make a storybook using either their own artwork or online graphics to help teach English to Spanish-speaking students.  The book should concentrate on teaching one simple concept.  Each page should have a simple sentence in Spanish with an appropriate picture to aid the meaning of the sentence.  The page opposite should use the same picture but show the English translation of the sentence.  The book should contain at least 10 pages and a title/cover page that includes the author - You!

HW:  Per. 5B ONLY - Due to the PSAT on Wednesday, students in Per. 5B will not meet for the next Spanish class until Friday.  For Friday, review for skills tests #12 and #13.  Know how to say "I like..." or "I don't like" activities and how to ask and respond to questions in a conversation about likes and dislikes.

Using the adjectives list provided, create an acrostic poem using the first letters of your Spanish first name.   Decorate it appropriately using pictures or symbols to represent the characteristics outlined in the poem.  For example, if you use the word "deportista," then have a picture of some sports equipment.

7th Grade Spanish - Oct. 1st

HW:  Create a Spanish color by number.  You may draw a picture or use a page from a coloring book. Think of a picture that would use many colors....a rainbow....a clown holding many balloons, a butterfly.

You may write directions on the bottom of the page or on a separate sheet, if necessary.  Make sure that you have plenty of space so that your writing is clear and easy to read.

Number the paper from one to ten.  Next to each number, write a different color in Spanish, but mix up the letters.  Make sure you include all of the correct letters.  Then leave a blank for someone to write in the correct spelling of the color.
                    For example:  1.  joor = ___________________

Number the various balloons or sections of your drawing so that they correspond to the different colors.

DO NOT color in your paper.  You will give this paper to another student in class to complete.

HW:  Study for test on numbers 0 to 100.  You must be able to say the numbers correctly from 0 to 20 and counting by ten's from 30 to 100.  Use the website for numbers in the Blog List on the left for help and practice.

HW:  Create a person out of numbers.  For example, use a 0 for the head or lots of 3's for hair.  Then label the numbers you use in Spanish.

HW:  Fold a paper in half like a taco.  On the top half, write 10 math problems using Spanish numbers from 0 to 100 and the math expressions for plus, minus, times, and divided by.
 Example:  dos por treinta son _____________.    On the bottom half, make an answer key and write the answers in Spanish.

*Be careful to write math problems with answers between 0 and 100 so you know how to write them.

7th Grade Spanish - September 19th

HW:  Create a worksheet to practice numbers 0 to 20 in Spanish like the game "Wheel of Fortune."  Fold a paper in half lengthwise like a "burrito."  Draw a line down the middle.  Number the paper from 1 to 15.  Select one of the Spanish words for a number from 0 to 20 and write the word, leaving out one or two letters and putting a blank there instead.  On the right side of the paper across from the word with the missing letters, write out the answer and the corresponding number.  Example:  1.  v_in_e          veinte = 20

8th Grade Spanish - el 19 de septiembre

HW:  Review for Parts of the Body test and complete the El Cuerpo project (if you did not already turn it in).  (Create a body with all of your parts of the body vocabulary using the Spanish words to create the body part.  For example, the eyes would be the word "boca" would be written several times to create a picture of a mouth.)

HW:  Prepare for your skills test on the calendar by choosing any 20 calendar words to create a "sure fire" study list.  Your study list should include a minimum of 4 columns.  Words may include days, months, or words such as "today," "tomorrow," "day," "date," "first," "month," "year."  For the test, you should be able to give any date and ask questions such as "What is the date?" and "What day is today?"

HW:  Create a picture of a monster with 1 to 10 of the body parts on your vocab list.  DO NOT label each part of the body but you should use the picture to be able to point to and say the part of the body.  Give your monster a name.

HW:  Use  the story vocabulary to write 10 sentences in Spanish using names of 10 different people in class.  Each sentence should use 3 actions in a sequence.  Add details to make the sentence more interesting.  Example:  Sra. Dennis se levanta, camina a la papelera, y tira el examen en la papelera.

Here is a list of small words often needed to connect information in a sentence:

en = on, in        de = of, from     a = to, at     con = with     porque = because

HW:  Study the names of countries and capitals for Spanish-speaking countries in South America.  Can you say the Spanish name for each using correct Spanish pronunciation?

HW:  Create a "sure fire" way to study list with Spanish-speaking countries and capitals

Directions:  Divide your paper into 4 columns.  In the first column, write the names of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries.  In the second column, write the capital for each country.  Fold back the first column so that you are looking at the list of capitals only.  Now try to fill in the country for each capital.  If you do not know the answer, you can open up the paper to look at the first column.  BUT only look at it, remember it, fold back the column, and THEN write your answer.  After you have filled in the list of countries, fold back the 2nd column.  Fill in the capital for each country listed in your 3rd column.  ONLY consult the 2nd column if you cannot remember an answer.  Look at it, memorize it, then turn back the column and fill in your answer.  By the end of the activity, you should have filled in 4 columns.

HW:  Fold a piece of computer paper in half (taco style).  Put a picture of a famous person from a country other than the U.S.A. on the top half of the paper and write "My name is _________." in Spanish.  Fill in the name of the famous person.  On the bottom half, put a picture of a map showing the country that the person is from and write "I am from _______." in Spanish.  Fill in the name of the country.  At the very bottom of the paper, write a brief headline explaining why that person is famous.

Reminder:  Review your alphabet and practice being able to spell using Spanish letters.  If you did not download the vocabulary, please do so before the next class meeting.

We made it!

Hola, estudiantes,

It's hard to believe we've made it through another school year!  I am so proud of all of my students!  Everyone passed their EOC with a C or above! (80%-A; 12%-B; 8%-C)  What a way to end the school year!

Thank you for the many thoughtful cards and gifts.  I look forward to having some time off and feeling re-energized to start a new year.  Have a wonderful summer break!

Reminder:  If you want to continue taking Spanish in 8th grade, you MUST return the elective request form  distributed to you in class to Mrs. Cameron in the Guidance Office by Friday, May 31st.  The form MUST have a parent signature.  Requests will be granted in the order in which they are received until all student slots are filled.  Completion of both the 7th and 8th grade full-year courses will earn credit for the Spanish 1 high school level course.

7th Grade Spanish - Chapter 3A Test

The test for Chapter 3A will be given on Friday, April 26th (A-Day) and Monday, April 29th (B-Day).
Students should have completed all of the Tarea activities and WAVA Act. 1-4 and Act. 10 & 11.  All worksheets should be corrected, in order, and ready to turn in at the beginning of class, before taking the test.

Use the online websites, your vocab lists and notes to review how to describe different foods and drinks, how to say what you like, love, and don't like to eat or drink, and how to conjugate -er and -ir verbs.

8th Grade Spanish - el 18 de abril

HW: Create a chart on computer paper with 16 blocks. In each block put a picture or drawing of a person from the shoulders up. Eight of the people should be women and eight should be men. You should also vary their hair color, hair length, color of eyes, age, and facial features (glasses, beard, moustache, big eyes, big ears, etc.) Each person should be given a name that is clearly feminine or masculine. The charts will be used to play "Guess Who" in Spanish.

Thursday (3/14)  for A - Day classes and by Friday (3/15) for B-Day classes.

On Thursday and Friday, you will complete an in-class project for a test grade.  You may use your notes to help you complete the project but may not consult another student for help. Please bring a book to read or other homework to complete in case you finish your project before the end of class.

Test for Chapter 2A/2B is next week.

World Language Festival - Congratulations!

Congratulations to all 19 students from the 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes who participated in the World Language Festival on Saturday, March 2nd at Oceanway Middle School.  Our team took home a 1st Place trophy in the Trivia Brain Brawl competition, 1st place in the vocabulary bee for Spanish 1, and all students in the poetry declamation and impromptu speaking categories received "Superior" ratings.  You all are "estupendos"!!!!!

P.S.  "Muchas gracias" to all the parents who provided the transportation and support for students to attend the festival!

You should review vocabulary and grammar notes from both chapters and be able to talk about activities using the verbs "ir," "gustar," and "jugar."  You should also know how to extend, accept, decline invitations, tell at what time an event happens, and give excuses for not attending such as having something you have to do or being too busy, tired, etc. Extra practice for vocabulary is on www.conjuguemos.com and Success Net on www.phschool.com.


Reminder:  Those attending the college field trip should complete WAVA Act. 11 and 12 by Tuesday, February 5th when they return to class.  Also, complete the "mini-drama" activity with your group and review for the test on material from Capítulo 4A/4B.

7th Grade Spanish - Inroduction Speech

HW:  Write a rough draft for your introduction speech.

CAUTION:  Do NOT write your speech in English and then use an online translator to covert the speech into Spanish.  DO use your class notes to write your speech.  The goal of the assignment is to use the vocabulary we have learned in class so far this year.  ONLY words from the vocab lists may be used in your speech.  Remember, you want your speech to be understood by everyone else in the class, so they also must be familiar with the vocabulary you use.
