HW:  Create a "Sure Fire Way to Study List" for the South American capitals and countries.  
Step 1:  List the countries on the left side of a page. 
Step 2:  Without looking at your notes, write the names of the capitals you can remember. 
Step 3:  To fill in the missing answers, look at your notes for the answer, close the notes, and then
                fill in the answer on your list from memory.  DO NOT copy directly from your notes.
                You may have to open your notes, consult the list, and close it more than once.
Step 4:  Fold back the countries list, so only the capitals list is showing.
Step 5:  Write in the names of the countries next to each capital.
Step 6:  Again, if you can't remember, consult your notes but DO NOT copy directly from your notes.
Step 7:  Continue the process, folding back the previous column and writing the answers from memory until
                you can do the complete list of coutries and capitals without looking at your notes.
Have the list ready to show me as a homework assignment.

Would you believe I am already thinking about next year!!!!  For those of you who want to keep those skills sharp for next year, here are some study suggestions for the summer.

You can review vocabulary with online flashcards for each chapter by using the textbook website www.phschool.com and clicking on "SuccessNet."  Choose the Level 1 - Realidades textbook.  Then click on one of the chapters from the list on the left.  Next, click on "flashcards" in the menu at the top of the page.

There are also practice exercises, explanations and videos to help you learn how to use the vocabulary correctly.  Just click on a chapter from the menu on the left and work your way through the lesson.

If you would prefer to review material by listening to a song, go to www.phschool.com and type in jcd-0099 as the web code.  Click on "Realidades...Home Page" and it will take you to a page with "Hip Hop" songs for each chapter.

You can also review vocabulary by using www.conjuguemos.com.  This website has a variety of ways to practice vocabulary.  Plus, you can send me your results, so I know that you are practicing over the summer!

I'll be checking my e-mail throughout the summer, so let me know if you get any opportunities to use your Spanish over the summer.

Your last assignment to turn in is the "¿Eres tú, Maríia?" notes.  We will watch the remaining episodes (8, 9, and 10) in class.  Your notes should be up-to-date for Episodes 1 thru 7.  If you were absent and missed the notes, you can use the summary at the end of each chapter in your textbook for help.

I can't say it enough...."Muchas Gracias" to all of the parents, students and teachers who helped make our second annual "Salsa de Mayo" event a huge success!
I still can't believe we managed to clean and decorate the cafeteria in one and a half hours.  The students and parents created an amazing, festive atmosphere.  Special thanks go to Mr. Loughran and the decoration committee for our new palm tree murals...VERY IMPRESSIVE!
Then we fed 115 students (nearly twice the number of last year) in record time due to the great organization of our volunteers by Mrs. Prattos.
The goal was to give our 8th Grade Spanish students a total immersion experience in language and culture and I think we accomplished our goal.  For 3 hours, students danced, ate, spoke, and listened to ESPAÑOL!

"Salsa de Mayo" party is on Friday, May 4th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Just a few reminders:

       Dress to impress. Collared shirts and nice pants are preferred for the boys. Skirt and blouse or  dress and shoes with back strap are preferred for the girls.  Flip flops are discouraged.  You will have time to change clothes after school.  Clothing must be in compliance with Duval County dress code.

       No cell phones or cameras may be used during the party.  Pictures will be taken by assigned parent photographers.

6th Grade Spanish - Currency Project and Next Test

Students in 6th Grade Spanish should complete the following project for Wednesday, April 11th:

Choose a Spanish-speaking country and research their form of currency.
Your research should include:

*an image/picture of the money
*an explanation of who or what is on the money and why that
image or symbol is significant
*the exchange rate or value of the money in US dollars

Reminder: Return volunteer forms for "Salsa de Mayo" on May 4th and permits for the "Spanish Immersion Lock-in" at Oceanway Middle School on April 20th.

FYI: "Salsa de Mayo" is a celebration of Hispanic language and culture with other students in Spanish 1 classes from several middle schools. The party will take place on Friday, May 4th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This event gives students an opportunity to use their Spanish in a real setting with other students of equal capability. Participation in this event is part of the students' grades for the 4th term. Students who do not attend will be required to complete a separate project to make up for missed points.

The "Spanish Immersion Lock-in" is another opportunity for Spanish 1 students to use their Spanish outside the classroom. Students will take a pledge to speak Spanish only from 7:30 p.m. on Friday night, April 20th, until 10:30 p.m. on Saturday morning, April 21st. Students will participate in a number of activities including conversation groups, dance lessons, crafts, games, and watching a movie in Spanish. There is no cost but each student will be asked to contribute a different food item for the event.
